Is it possible to take a break from work for a few months without giving up your job? A longer vacation can help you regain motivation, take care of your mental health and look at your career from a new perspective. Sabbath leave provides such an opportunity. What is it, who is entitled to it and can you use it in Poland?

What is sabbatical leave?

Sabbatical leave, also called sabbatical leave, is a longer break from work, lasting from a few weeks to even a year. Unlike standard annual leave, it serves not only regeneration, but also personal development, education or rethinking further careers.

The concept of sabbatical originated in academia, where researchers were given time for research and development. Currently, sabbatical leave also functions in business, especially in international corporations, as an employee benefit.

Who can take sabbatical leave?

Sabbatical is most often offered to experienced employees who have been associated with the company for several years. However, it is not reserved only for senior managers. Depending on the company’s policy, it can also be used by specialists and other long-term employees, regardless of the position held.

When deciding to grant sabbatical leave, the employer takes into account, m.in, the length of service, the employee’s needs and the possibility of providing a replacement for the time of his absence.

Is sabbatical leave paid and what does labor law say?

In Poland, sabbatical leave is not separately regulated by the Labor Code. Therefore, the employee does not have a statutory right to such a break, and the possibility of taking it depends on the arrangements with the employer.

Sabbatical can be paid, partially paid or unpaid. Some companies offer it as an additional benefit in the form of paid regenerative leave, allowing you to keep all or part of your salary. Another solution is unpaid leave. Before starting paid leave or a break without pay, it is worth setting in writing the rules of financing, the date of its end and the conditions for returning to work.

Why do employees decide to take a sabbatical?

A common reason is the need to rest after years of intensive work, especially when symptoms of burnout appear. A longer period of time off from duties allows you to rest, reduce stress, regain balance and regain motivation to act.

However, not every sabbatical means only rest. Employees use this time to travel, learn new skills, carry out their own projects or develop themselves. It is also an opportunity to rethink their previous professional goals.

What are the benefits and challenges of sabbatical?

A well-planned recovery leave can have a positive impact on an employee’s well-being and engagement, helping them return to their duties with greater motivation. On the other hand, it can help the employer increase team loyalty and retain experienced professionals.

The challenge is the cost of replacement, the division of duties and the possible loss of income by the employee. Therefore, before starting sabbatical leave, it is worth planning the transfer of tasks and the conditions for returning to the company. After a long absence, the employee may also need time to reintroduce himself to his duties.

leave worth taking?

Sabbatical can be a good solution for people who need time to recover, change their perspective or implement their own plans. However, the decision to take sabbatical leave requires proper preparation and clear arrangements with the employer.

For companies, it’s a way to build loyalty and retain talent, and for employees, it’s a chance to rest, grow, and return to duties with renewed energy.
