Have you ever wondered if your Monday has to mean eight hours in one company, or maybe it's time to bet on polywork, following the example of modern specialists? In the age of digitization, more and more people are abandoning the rigid framework of a full-time job, seeing the poly-activity model as an opportunity for greater freedom and security.

What is polywork?

In today’s fast-paced world, the traditional one-job career model is slowly becoming a relic of the past. Its place is taken by polyworking. This phenomenon, although known for years, today is gaining a completely new face, becoming a conscious choice of modern professionals, for whom working in one company is not enough.

What exactly is polywork?

Polywork is a professional model that involves performing several different gainful activities at the same time. Unlike the classic “making money”, modern poly-activity is a strategy of development and building security. In this model, one person can be an analyst in the morning and in the afternoon work in a completely different category of services, e.g. as a business advisor or content creator.

More and more people decide to take such a step because it gives a real sense of agency. Today’s employees don’t want to be assigned to one desk. The goal of such an approach is not only profit, but above all the maximum use of one’s own knowledge and potential in many fields at the same time.

Why do employees choose polywork?

The popularity of this phenomenon is due to the overlap of several trends. Thanks to modern technologies, geographical barriers have ceased to exist. Here are the key reasons to consider this model:

  • Financial security: Having several sources of income protects you from a sudden loss of liquidity.
  • Diversity in the classes: The ability to combine technical and creative work protects against routine and burnout.
  • Flexibility: It’s up to you to decide whether your Monday starts with an audit for a corporation or writing an expert social media post for your own brand.

It is worth noting that hard market data indicate a growing number of freelancers who are no longer looking for permanent employment, but for a portfolio of clients. Such specialists spend their time on design work, which gives them much more satisfaction than a rigid full-time framework.

Challenges: The Other Side of the Coin

Although polywork sounds like an ideal recipe for freedom, it brings significant challenges:

  1. Time management: Balancing between different projects requires iron discipline. It is difficult to maintain high quality with many distracted activities.
  2. Information overload: Constantly switching between different company contexts can be tiring for the brain.
  3. Formalities: Settling taxes under several different contracts can be complicated and requires basic knowledge of accounting.

The future of the labour market

Experts predict that the polywork model will become the standard for the next generations. Companies will have to learn to work with people who are not associated with one brand for years. It is a transition from the “I have a job” model to the “I manage my skills portfolio” model.

Instead of asking “where do you work?”, we will increasingly ask about what areas you are currently helping your clients in. Polywork is not only a way to make money, it is above all a new lifestyle based on autonomy.
