Job evaluation

What is job evaluation?
Job evaluation is a structured process of assessing the relative value of individual positions in an organization. Its purpose is to reflect the natural hierarchy of positions based on objective criteria, such as: required competencies, scope of responsibility, complexity of tasks, working conditions or the impact of the position on the achievement of the organization’s goals. Job evaluation does not refer to specific people, but to the role in the structure itself – it serves as a basis for designing elements of remuneration policy, remuneration grids, classification categories or promotions.
Methods of work evaluation and the course of this process
Job evaluation requires the collection of job descriptions, the definition of a set of job evaluation criteria and the adoption of an appropriate method. The most common analytical methods are used, which consist in a detailed analysis of individual criteria, such as: required skills, education, independence, responsibility, impact on the achievement of important business goals, or special conditions and special authorizations.
Each position is assigned points in individual categories, and the sum of points determines its place in the hierarchy of positions. The evaluation includes both operational positions and managerial or managerial positions. It is crucial that the point ranges must correspond to the real differences between the positions, and the ranges of each range should be proportional and consistent with the actual organizational structure.
Meaning and Application
The results of the evaluation process are used to build basic salary grids, determine point ranges, and can also be the basis for the implementation of possible adjustments in remuneration systems, such as adjustments to bonus rules or possible adjustments to the valuation of positions. Verified position values help to ensure consistency in the remuneration of people at different levels of individual positions and in different positions, as well as support compliance with the principles of equal pay.
It is important that representatives of various units, including HR, line managers and managers, are involved in the process. Their participation allows for a more accurate assessment of the difficulties of work, taking into account data on effectiveness and adjusting valuation to the specifics of the company.
